Selling Music Online:
Who Will be the Winners and the
Losers?
Since its launch in April 2003, Apple's iTunes Music
Store has sold over 25 million songs, solidifying its position as the
early leader in the fast-growing market for downloadable music. Despite
posting successful sales numbers, Apple's Chief Executive Steve Jobs was
recently quoted as saying "[b]etween the license fees and the
credit-card charges, there's no money in online music." For Apple, the
payoff comes in selling its iPod players that work hand in hand with the
store. For competitors, like Napster, MusicMatch, MusicNet, MusicNow and
Rhapsody, and others, like Coke, Pepsi, Wal-Mart, Amazon.com and
Microsoft, who are entering the crowded market, questions remain. Is
there a viable business model for selling music online? Can
licensed services compete with free downloads from file-sharing
networks? Who will be the winners and the losers in the world of
online music sales?

The Future of P2P:
Can the Music Industry Profit from Legitimate Uses of P2P?
While pursuing a legal strategy focused on putting an end to
unauthorized file-sharing through peer-to-peer networks, most in the
industry acknowledge that P2P is not a short-term technology and artists
and some labels are beginning to experiment with legitimate uses of P2P.
This panel will discuss legitimate uses of P2P and consider the
challenges and opportunities facing the industry in trying to determine
how best to utilize this powerful technology.

Death of the CD?
DVDs, Games and Other Formats for Music Delivery
CD sales are declining and consumer spending is shifting
to DVDs, video games and other formats. How are consumers reacting to
new formats? Will new formats generate the kind of success that the
industry experienced with CDs during the '80s and '90s?

Mobile Music Deals:
Maximizing the Potential of the Mobile Market
With over $3 billion in worldwide sales in 2002,
ringtones have shown significant revenue potential for labels,
publishers, ringtone providers, handset manufacturers and artists. The
music industry is exploring other ways to create new revenue streams by
distributing music through mobile technologies. Among other
announcements, in December 2003,
cell phone
maker Nokia announced that it partnered with hip-hop artist Jay-Z to
create a special edition of the Nokia 3300 music phone pre-loaded with a
multimedia card containing Jay-Z's recently released Black Album. This
panel will explore the challenges and opportunities for music industry
executives seeking to maximize the potential of the mobile market.
