PANEL 1
THE STATE OF THE DIGITAL UNION:
The Outlook for Online & Mobile Music Markets
According to industry forecasts cited by Warner Music Group Chairman &
CEO Edgar Bronfman in December, revenue from "digital" distribution
(i.e., delivery via the Internet or other data network rather than via a
physical medium such as CD) will increase from 2% industry-wide today to
25% to 27% in 2008. This represents a significant shift, due in part to
positive consumer response to the iPod, ringtones, music phones, digital
radio and other digital products now in the marketplace. This panel will
discuss distribution platforms, devices and business models driving
online and mobile music markets. How are record labels, music companies,
telephone carriers and technology providers positioning their businesses
to take advantage of opportunities in the digital music market?
How is the industry addressing obstacles - such as interoperability and
pricing issues - to establishing a healthy and profitable marketplace?

LAWYERS, GEEKS & MONEY:
The Clash Between Technology & Copyright Law
In
December, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to review the federal appellate
court decision in MGM v. Grokster that held peer-to-peer software
providers Grokster and StreamCast not liable for secondary or
contributory copyright infringement. The case and others before it -
e.g., Napster, Aimster and Betamax - have
challenged the courts to determine how best to balance the competing
interests of copyright protection and the promotion of technological
innovation. This panel of legal and policy experts will discuss the main
issues in MGM v. Grokster, including factors distinguishing it
from the Napster, Aimster and Betamax decisions. What does
this case mean for the future of peer-to-peer and online piracy? Who is
winning the legal battle between copyrights and technology? Is
legislative action likely in 2005?

THE ONLINE MUSIC MARKET: Competition, Business Models & Courting
Consumers in a Crowded Market
In 2004, revenue from music
purchased online in the U.S., including CDs and vinyl, music downloads,
and streaming audio subscription reached almost $1 billion. It is clear
that consumers are increasingly looking to the Internet to purchase
music, but are they getting what they want from the download and
subscription services competing in this crowded market? How are consumer
brands - like Coke, McDonald's, Pepsi, Starbucks and Heineken - who have
entered the online music space verdanaing the market? What does the
future hold for new legal peer-to-peer services like SnoCap and Mashboxx?
Is there a viable business model for selling music online?

THE MOBILE MUSIC MARKET:
What Does the Future Hold for this Booming Market?
As mobile technologies and
applications improve, the mobile phone is positioned to become the key
device for music to be digitally accessed and distributed. According to
Warner Music Group Chairman & CEO Edgar Bronfman,
wireless network providers will soon become
the major distributors of music to MP3 enabled mobile phones with memory
comparable to that of current portable music players, posing a threat to
Apple's dominance in the portable music player business. This panel will
discuss developments in the mobile music market, including
revenue-generating opportunities such as music videos, full-track
streaming of music, ring tones and "ringbacks". What changes lie ahead
as record labels enter the mobile music value chain and wireless network
providers enter the music distribution game?
